Description

Tiwanaku all day long

Depart from the city of La Paz for the town of Tiwanaku. The visit includes the Ceramics Museum, which displays utensils and other artifacts from the village, urban, and expansion phases. Next, you will tour the archaeological complex: you will ascend the Akapana Pyramid and visit the Semi-subterranean Temple (adorned with sculpted heads protruding from the walls) and the Akapana Temple, home to the Gate of the Sun. Each of these temples symbolized a distinct physical realm: the sky, the earth, and the underworld. You will also visit the Lithic Museum to see the "Pachamama" (or "Bennett") monolith, dedicated to "Mother Earth" and considered the largest in Tiwanaku. At midday, you will have lunch on-site and then take a walk through the town to admire the church's exterior. Passing by stones from the ruins and monoliths at the entrance, you will view the carved stones—as magnificent as they are mysterious—of "Puma Punku," another three-tiered pyramid housing the complex's largest worked stones, as well as the famous "H"-shaped blocks. Finally, you will return to the city of La Paz.
